Things to Do in Lake Harmony, PA — From Hosts Who Live Here
Ask us what there is to do in Lake Harmony and we will happily talk your ear off, because we live this town alongside our guests every weekend. The short version: skiing is 3 minutes away at Big Boulder and 5 at Jack Frost, the Lake Harmony Estates beach is a walk from our front door, and Kalahari, Jim Thorpe, Pocono Raceway and Hickory Run State Park are all within 25 minutes. Lake Harmony itself is a roughly 120-acre spring-fed glacial lake at 1,841 feet in Kidder Township, Carbon County — small enough to paddle across, private enough that it never feels crowded.
We are Doug, Nicholas and Kellie, and after 7 years of hosting and 790 guest reviews averaging 4.93 stars across our properties, this page is the exact rundown we send guests before every stay at The Lake Harmony Chalet, our 5-bedroom home in Lake Harmony Estates that sleeps 14. Every drive time below is measured from our driveway, not from a vague "Poconos area" pin, and every restaurant is one we have actually eaten at. When something on this page sells you on a weekend, our calendar is here.
Lake Harmony, PA at a Glance
Most guides skip the basics, so here they are first. Lake Harmony is both a lake and the village around it, and the distinction matters when you are planning: the village has restaurants, bars and ski slopes open to everyone, while the lake is private.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Type of lake | Natural spring-fed glacial lake — not a reservoir |
| Size | About 120 acres |
| Depth | Roughly 18 feet at its deepest today (originally measured at 31 feet) |
| Elevation | 1,841 feet above sea level |
| Where | Kidder Township, Carbon County, Pennsylvania (ZIP 18624) |
| Outflow | Drains into Tobyhanna Creek, which feeds the Lehigh River |
| Ownership | Privately held — the Lake Harmony Group owns about 80% of the lakebed, Split Rock Resort the rest |
| Public access | None. No public boat launch and no public swimming beach |
| Nearest cities | About 1.5 hours from Philadelphia, about 2 hours from New York City |
The part that trips people up: because the lake is private, "things to do in Lake Harmony" splits into two lists — what anyone can do (ski, eat, hike, waterpark, day-trip) and what you can only do as an owner, association member or their guest (swim at the Estates beach, put a boat in). Staying inside Lake Harmony Estates, as our guests do, puts you on the second list. The sections below flag which is which.

Winter: Ski Big Boulder in 3 Minutes, Jack Frost in 5
Winter in Lake Harmony means skiing and snowboarding at two mountains you can reach before your seat warmers finish kicking in: Big Boulder is a 3-minute drive from the chalet and Jack Frost is 5 minutes. No other home base in the Poconos puts you closer to both.
Jack Frost skis bigger than first-timers expect, with about 600 feet of vertical and a trail map that leans toward relaxed, family-friendly cruisers. Big Boulder built its reputation on terrain parks, aggressive snowmaking, and night sessions. One honest local note: Vail Resorts has shifted operations between the two hills in recent seasons, so before you plan lessons or snow tubing, check the current schedule at jfbb.com to confirm what is spinning where, and book lift tickets ahead on holiday weekends because they do sell out. Our full comparison of the two mountains — terrain, crowds, and which one fits your group — is in our Big Boulder vs. Jack Frost guide, and our 2026–27 ski season preview tracks what is new this winter.
Beyond the two local hills, winter here also means snow tubing at Camelback about 30 minutes away, ice fishing and ice skating on the lake in a hard freeze, and quiet winter hiking at Hickory Run when the Boulder Field is dusted with snow.
The real reason ski groups book us, though, is the after part. You are back at the chalet minutes after last chair, boots off by the door, and straight into the 6-person hot tub and the 8-person wet/dry sauna while dinner goes on the stove. We wrote the whole ski-weekend playbook — gear storage, powder-day timing, feeding 14 people after a full day on the hill — on our Poconos ski chalet page.
On the Water: The Beach, Boat Rentals, Swimming & Fishing
Summer here revolves around the water, and the Lake Harmony Estates beach is walking distance from the chalet — mornings start with coffee on the sand instead of a hunt for parking. Swimming season generally runs from late May into September, when the spring-fed water finally gives up and warms.
Can you swim in Lake Harmony?
Yes — but only if you are a property owner, an association member, or their guest. There is no public swimming access anywhere on the lake, which is the single most common surprise for first-time visitors. Guests staying with us at the chalet walk to the Lake Harmony Estates beach. If you are visiting for the day without a local connection, plan on Hickory Run State Park's Sand Spring Lake beach, 20 minutes away and open to everyone, typically from late May to mid-September.
Boat rentals on Lake Harmony
Lake Harmony has no public boat launch, and motorboats are limited to lakefront owners and community members under association speed and wake rules — which is exactly why the water stays calm enough that kayaks and paddleboards genuinely share it. To get out on the water, two operations serve the lake:
- Yeti WaterSports at Split Rock, a 5-minute drive — kayaks, tandem kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, canoes, pedal boats and pontoons, generally Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Lake Harmony Watersports, on North Lake Drive a few minutes from the chalet — pontoon rentals plus waterskiing, wakeboarding and tubing sessions behind a real tow boat, with pickup at the waterfront.
Summer weekends book out, so reserve a day or two ahead. Between the two, a group of 14 can split into paddlers and boaters and meet back at the beach by lunch.
Fishing
Lake Harmony holds bass, perch, pickerel and panfish, and because there is no public launch it sees a fraction of the pressure of a public Pocono lake. Fishing from the Estates beach and community shoreline is a guest privilege, and a Pennsylvania fishing license is required for anyone 16 and over — buy one online through the PA Fish & Boat Commission before you arrive. For a guided trip, Captain Joe's Fishing runs charters on local waters. If you want genuinely open public fishing, Tobyhanna Creek below the lake and the Lehigh River near White Haven are both within 20 minutes.
Back at the chalet, summer evenings are the main event: burgers on the Viking grill, dinner for the whole crew under the 20-foot lighted gazebo that seats 10, then s'mores at the fire pit ringed by 10 Adirondack chairs. Our day-by-day warm-weather itinerary is on the Lake Harmony summer page, and the full backyard rundown is on our amenities page.
Free Things to Do — Including the Walk Nobody Tells You About
Not everything here costs a lift ticket. Our favourite free thing to do in Lake Harmony is the one most visitors never hear about.
The Kidder Hike & Bike Trail is a flat, crushed-stone path about a third of a mile long and 12 feet wide, fully wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, running alongside Big Boulder Drive and Lake Harmony Road. The trailhead sits across the street from Louie's Prime in the village. It is short, but it is the only safe walking connection between the village restaurants and the Big Boulder side of town, and you get water views of Big Boulder Lake, Lake Harmony and Round Pond along the way. Kidder Township opened the first section in 2019 and has been extending it since. We send guests down it with strollers, dogs and hangovers in roughly equal measure.
Other things that cost nothing:
- The lake road loop — a walk or easy bike around the lake roads past the boathouses; best at golden hour, and the reason half our guests come back with the same sunset photo.
- Hickory Run State Park, 20 minutes — free entry, more than 40 miles of trails, the 16-acre Boulder Field National Natural Landmark, and Hawk Falls, a short walk to a 25-foot waterfall.
- Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area, about 15 minutes — quiet walking paths along Tobyhanna Creek, good for birding and a genuinely peaceful hour.
- Leaf peeping in October — the drive along Route 903 toward Jim Thorpe is the one we point people at; see our fall foliage guide for peak-week timing.
- Stargazing from the backyard — at 1,841 feet with no streetlights in the Estates, the sky here does most of the work.
Restaurants in Lake Harmony, PA — Where We Actually Eat
You do not need to drive to dinner in Lake Harmony: two of the town's favourite spots are a short walk from the chalet. Here is the full list we send guests, ordered by how far you have to go, with what each one is actually good for.
Walk from the chalet
- Nick's Lake House — short walk. The iconic one: waterfront dining right on Lake Harmony with a big outdoor bar over the water, live music in summer, and a sports bar inside. Great food, great views, reasonable prices. Go at sunset and hold out for a deck table.
- Shenanigans — short walk. The town's Irish pub and its late shift: pub food, pool, and the liveliest weekend crowd in the village.
Under 5 minutes by car
- Boulder View Tavern — dependable American menu with big windows over Big Boulder Lake and local musicians most weekends.
- Piggy's — the breakfast institution: a down-home, pig-themed diner that fuels ski mornings. Expect a wait on winter weekends and order accordingly.
- Louie's Prime — the steakhouse in the village, and the trailhead landmark for the Kidder Hike & Bike Trail.
- Terra Cottage Cafe — the small coffee-and-gifts stop locals name first when you ask about breakfast that is not a diner.
Worth the short drive
- Murph's Hideaway — 4.5 miles. A casual Irish neighbourhood pub: burgers, wings, daily food specials, a two-hour happy hour every day, and live music at weekends. Decent food, OK prices, easy low-key night.
- Jubilee Restaurant — 8.7 miles, Pocono Pines. Calls itself the "Breakfast King of the Poconos" and largely earns it — pancakes, challah French toast, omelettes from around 8 a.m., plus a full lunch and dinner menu of burgers, pot roast and ribs. Great atmosphere, good prices. Arrive before 9 a.m. at weekends or queue.
- AJ Pizza & Parm House — 11.1 miles. Best pizza around, and the one we order when we are feeding a full house. Stromboli and calzones too; they may deliver if the order is big enough and they have the staff.
- Thorpe's 903 — on Route 903 toward Jim Thorpe. A 70-seat dining room with a full bar in the rebuilt former Trattoria 903 space; weekday breakfast and a varied dinner menu. The newest addition between the lake and town — more in what's new in the Poconos for 2026.
- Barley Creek Brewing & Distilling — 14.4 miles, Tannersville. The local brewery: microbrews, pub fare and outdoor games. The rainy-afternoon adult field trip.
- The Renegade Winery — 22 miles, Jim Thorpe. An urban winery on Main Street with live music and boutique shops either side. Worth stacking onto a Jim Thorpe day trip.
For nights in, the kitchen and the Viking grill comfortably feed a full crew of 14, and the billiard room's wet bar covers the nightcap. More on the neighbourhood — including exactly where we send guests on their first night — is on our location page.
Rainy-Day Plans That Actually Work
A rainy Pocono day is a Kalahari day: America's largest indoor waterpark, 220,000 square feet of slides, wave pool, and lazy river under one warm roof, sits 25 minutes from the chalet. Day passes are available to visitors who are not staying at the resort, and our staying near Kalahari guide covers timing, tickets, and how to run the park with a group of 14 without losing anyone at the wave pool. Great Wolf Lodge, about 15 miles out, is the smaller alternative when Kalahari sells out.
Closer to home, the Galleria at Split Rock, 5 minutes away, packs a bowling alley, a movie theater, and an arcade with more than 70 games under one roof, and the H2Oooohh indoor waterpark there is currently listed as closed until further notice — check its status before planning around it, since schedules shift with the seasons.
And honestly, some of our best guest feedback comes from rained-out days that never left the property. The speakeasy billiard room with its 8-foot pool table and wet bar, 8 smart 65-inch TVs, 1 GB WiFi that never buffers mid-movie, plus the sauna and hot tub steaming in the rain — a storm mostly just changes the dress code. Our reviews are full of groups who planned three outings and cancelled two happily.
Things to Do for Couples & Adults
Lake Harmony is best known as a family and ski-group town, but it handles a couples' weekend better than its reputation suggests — mostly because everything worth doing at night is walkable or a five-minute drive, so nobody has to be the designated driver.
- Sunset drinks on the water at Nick's outdoor bar, then a short walk home. This is the whole evening for a lot of our couples.
- The brewery-and-winery run — Barley Creek for beer and outdoor games, The Renegade Winery in Jim Thorpe for wine and live music.
- A Jim Thorpe day, 20 minutes: Victorian architecture, the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, galleries, the Asa Packer Mansion and a genuinely good dinner scene. Our hour-by-hour Jim Thorpe guide lays it out.
- Whitewater rafting on the Lehigh, run by outfitters in Jim Thorpe from spring through autumn — dam-release weekends are the big-water ones.
- Golf at Jack Frost National, a mountain course five minutes away with some of the better views in Carbon County.
- The quiet version — the sauna, the hot tub under the trees, and the fire pit after the kids in your group have gone to bed. Half the reason people book this house.
Things to Do With Kids
Lake Harmony is an easy win with kids because the distances are tiny: the beach is a walk, snow tubing is a short drive away in winter, and the community's arcade and bowling are paid-access perks a 5-minute drive from the door.
Our guests' kid highlights, roughly by age: little ones love the sandy Lake Harmony Estates beach and the pedal boats at Split Rock, 5 minutes away. Grade-schoolers vote for the Boulder Field at Hickory Run, 20 minutes, which is essentially a 16-acre natural jungle gym, and the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway in Jim Thorpe, also 20 minutes — an old-fashioned train ride along the river, with seasonal themed runs worth checking the current schedule for. Daisy Field Farm, 11 miles out, does pony rides and farm visits for the youngest crowd. Teenagers disappear into the billiard room or claim one of the 8 TVs, and in winter they will lap the tubing lanes until the lights come on.
The chalet itself is built for multi-family trips: 5 bedrooms, 7 beds, and 2.5 baths across 2,000+ square feet means two or three families can split up without anyone drawing the short straw, and the fenced yard keeps the under-6 crowd contained during dinner prep. See how other families used the space in our guest reviews — we hold 5.0 stars from our guests, and the kid verdicts are usually the funniest part.
Things to Do With Your Dog
Yes, bring the dog — the chalet is pet-friendly with a fully fenced quarter-acre backyard, which matters more than any trailhead when it is 7 a.m. and drizzling. The details and our simple pet policy are on the pet-friendly page.
The best dog outing in the area is Hickory Run State Park, a 20-minute drive, where leashed dogs are welcome on more than 40 miles of trails — from the flat, shaded Sand Spring Trail to the walk out across the famous 16-acre Boulder Field. One rule to know: dogs are not permitted on the swimming beach itself. Our Hickory Run Boulder Field guide maps the exact routes we do with guests' dogs, including where the footing gets rough for paws.
Around town, dogs join us for easy walks along the lake roads and the Kidder Hike & Bike Trail, and Jim Thorpe, 20 minutes away, is one of the more dog-tolerant small towns we know — water bowls outside shops and seasonal patio seating up and down Broadway.
Lake Harmony by Season — and What Is On This Weekend
The honest answer to "what is there to do in Lake Harmony this weekend" depends entirely on the month, so here is the year in one place.
| Season | What the weekend looks like |
|---|---|
| Winter (Dec–Mar) | Ski and ride Big Boulder and Jack Frost, snow tubing at Camelback, ice fishing in a hard freeze, hot tub and sauna after dark. Holiday events across the region — see our winter and holiday events calendar. |
| Spring (Apr–May) | Quiet season and the best rates. Whitewater rafting on the Lehigh starts with the dam releases, Hickory Run's waterfalls run hard, and Jim Thorpe wakes up. |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Beach mornings, pontoons and paddleboards, live music at Nick's outdoor bar, NASCAR weekend at Pocono Raceway, and grilling under the gazebo. The busiest and best-booked stretch of the year. |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | Peak foliage usually lands mid-to-late October here. Leaf-peeping drives, Jim Thorpe's festival weekends, empty trails at Hickory Run — read our fall foliage guide. |
For what is actually happening on a given weekend, the reliable sources are the event calendars at jfbb.com for the mountains, poconoraceway.com for race weekends, and the venues in Jim Thorpe — Penn's Peak and the Mauch Chunk Opera House both book real touring acts twenty minutes from the chalet. We keep the seasonal highlights up to date on our blog.
Day Trips From the Chalet
The chalet sits in the middle of the Poconos' best day trips: Pocono Raceway is 10 minutes away, and Jim Thorpe and Hickory Run State Park are each 20 minutes in different directions.
Jim Thorpe, 20 minutes, is the classic — a Victorian mountain town squeezed into the Lehigh Gorge, with the scenic railway, the Asa Packer Mansion, the Old Jail Museum, whitewater rafting outfitters, and rail-trail biking along the river. It deserves a full day, and our Jim Thorpe day trip guide gives you the hour-by-hour version.
Pocono Raceway, 10 minutes, is the Tricky Triangle — the 2.5-mile superspeedway whose NASCAR weekend each summer is the region's biggest single event. If your dates line up with a race, read our Pocono Raceway weekend guide before you book anything, because race traffic rewards a plan and punishes improvisation.
Hickory Run State Park, 20 minutes, earns a trip beyond the dog walks: the Boulder Field is a National Natural Landmark, Hawk Falls is a short family-friendly hike to a 25-foot waterfall, and the sandy beach at Sand Spring Lake is typically open from late May to mid-September. Start with our Boulder Field guide.
Here is the whole map in one glance — every time measured from our driveway:
| Destination | From the chalet | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Harmony Estates beach | Walkable | Swimming, lake mornings |
| Nick's Lake House & Shenanigans | Short walk | Dinner and drinks |
| Kidder Hike & Bike Trail | Short walk | Free accessible lake-view path |
| Big Boulder | 3 minutes | Skiing, terrain parks |
| Jack Frost | 5 minutes | Family-friendly skiing, golf |
| Split Rock (Galleria, boat rentals) | 5 minutes | Bowling, arcade, movies, rentals |
| Pocono Raceway | 10 minutes | NASCAR and track events |
| Hickory Run State Park | 20 minutes | Boulder Field, hiking, public beach |
| Jim Thorpe | 20 minutes | Historic town, railway, rafting |
| Kalahari Resort | 25 minutes | Indoor waterpark |
| Camelback | ~30 minutes | Snow tubing, adventure park |
| New York City | ~2 hours | Arrival day / departure day |
| Philadelphia | ~1.5 hours | Arrival day / departure day |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is there to do in Lake Harmony, PA?
In winter, ski Big Boulder (3 minutes from our chalet) and Jack Frost (5 minutes); in summer, swim at the walkable Lake Harmony Estates beach and rent kayaks or pontoons at Split Rock, 5 minutes away. Year-round, Kalahari's indoor waterpark is 25 minutes out, and Jim Thorpe, Pocono Raceway and Hickory Run State Park make easy day trips, with walkable lakeside restaurants like Nick's Lake House and Shenanigans in the village.
What is Lake Harmony, PA known for?
Lake Harmony is known for being a year-round Pocono Mountains resort village built around a private 120-acre spring-fed glacial lake, with two ski areas — Big Boulder and Jack Frost — within five minutes, lakefront restaurants and bars in the village, and Split Rock Resort on its shore. It is one of the closest true mountain-lake towns to both Philadelphia and New York City.
How big is Lake Harmony and how deep is it?
Lake Harmony covers about 120 acres and sits at an elevation of 1,841 feet in Kidder Township, Carbon County. It is a natural spring-fed glacial lake rather than a reservoir. Its deepest point was originally measured at 31 feet and is around 18 feet today, following decades of natural sedimentation.
Is Lake Harmony worth visiting?
Yes, particularly if you want mountains and water in one trip without a long drive. Within 25 minutes you have two ski areas, a state park with a National Natural Landmark boulder field, America’s largest indoor waterpark, a NASCAR superspeedway and a Victorian town in a river gorge. The catch worth knowing before you book: the lake itself is private, so lake access depends on where you stay.
Can you swim in Lake Harmony?
Yes, but only as a property owner, association member or their guest — there is no public swimming access. Guests at our chalet can walk to the Lake Harmony Estates beach. Day visitors without a local connection should use the public beach at Sand Spring Lake in Hickory Run State Park, 20 minutes away, typically open from late May to mid-September.
Are motorboats allowed on Lake Harmony?
Yes, but the lake is private with no public boat launch, and boating is governed by association rules with enforced speed and wake limits. That keeps the water far calmer than a typical public lake, which is why kayaks and paddleboards are so popular here.
Where can you rent a boat or kayak on Lake Harmony?
Two operations serve the lake. Yeti WaterSports at Split Rock, a 5-minute drive from the chalet, rents kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, canoes, pedal boats and pontoons, generally from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Lake Harmony Watersports on North Lake Drive runs pontoon rentals plus waterskiing, wakeboarding and tubing sessions. Reserve a day or two ahead on summer weekends.
Can you fish in Lake Harmony?
Yes. The lake holds bass, perch, pickerel and panfish, and because there is no public launch it sees far less pressure than a public Pocono lake. Shoreline fishing is a community and guest privilege, and anyone 16 or over needs a Pennsylvania fishing licence. For open public water, Tobyhanna Creek and the Lehigh River near White Haven are both within 20 minutes.
What are the best restaurants in Lake Harmony, PA?
Nick's Lake House is the iconic one — waterfront dining with an outdoor bar right on the lake — and Shenanigans is the village Irish pub; both are a short walk from our chalet. Within five minutes you also have Boulder View Tavern for lake views, Piggy's for breakfast, Louie's Prime for steak and Terra Cottage Cafe for coffee. Worth the short drive: Murph's Hideaway, Jubilee Restaurant in Pocono Pines, AJ Pizza & Parm House, and Barley Creek Brewing in Tannersville.
What free things are there to do in Lake Harmony?
The Kidder Hike & Bike Trail is a free, flat, wheelchair-accessible crushed-stone path with views of Big Boulder Lake, Lake Harmony and Round Pond, with its trailhead across from Louie’s Prime. Hickory Run State Park, 20 minutes away, has free entry, 40-plus miles of trails, Hawk Falls and the Boulder Field. The Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area and the walk around the lake roads at sunset cost nothing either.
What can you do in Lake Harmony when it rains?
Kalahari's 220,000-square-foot indoor waterpark is 25 minutes away, and the Galleria at Split Rock, 5 minutes from the chalet, has bowling, a 70-plus-game arcade, and a movie theater. Our chalet also carries a rainy day well on its own with a billiard room, sauna, hot tub, and 8 smart TVs.
Is Lake Harmony good for kids?
Very. The beach is walkable, snow tubing and ski lessons are minutes away in winter, the community arcade and bowling offer paid access, and the 16-acre Boulder Field at Hickory Run State Park, 20 minutes away, is a natural playground kids talk about for weeks. Daisy Field Farm does pony rides for the youngest crowd.
How far is Lake Harmony from NYC and Philadelphia?
Lake Harmony is about 2 hours from New York City and about 1.5 hours from Philadelphia, which makes it one of the closest true mountain-lake towns to both cities — close enough that many of our guests arrive in time for a Friday dinner on the lake.
